Improve Your Prospects With Nursing Continuing Education Credits

on October 22, 2009 in Nursing continuing education

You’ve studied and worked very hard to become a registered nurse, and it was no easy task. Now that you have your license, your studying is not over. To maintain your licensing requirements, as well as some employer mandates, you now have annual nursing continuing education credits to acquire. These are very important to maintain your skills and to be kept abreast of changes and improved medical procedures. Some employers offer free nursing continuing education credits with classes and seminars on site, and of course, you have the option of attending classes at a local college. Another option is to take classes online, which are sometimes a little less cost, but it takes a disciplined individual to allocate time to study online. If the nurse has a family, there are a lot of distractions that can make it difficult to study.

Every nurse knows that medicine changes on an almost daily basis as new drugs are discovered, new research is published and new technology improves care. As such, it is important to make sure that you are keeping up with it all via nursing continuing education credits that are recognised in your local area or state. As you may be aware, different states have different requirements as far as course and knowledge requirements are concerned, so you should make yourself aware of the credits you need to practice in your home state. The same obviously applies if you are planning to move and want to apply for a license elsewhere, or to become a travel nurse.

There are numerous nursing continuing education credits to choose from, the majority of which are available both offline and online so you can decide what is best for you. For example, you can choose from courses like domestic violence, HIV, Alzheimer’s Disease, Tuberculosis, breastfeeding, infection control and medical errors. In truth, there are hundreds of courses that you can take to maintain your credit requirements so you can go on learning and practicing medicine as long as you maintain the passion to look after people and provide solutions to their medical problems. Additionally, should you decide to move into another field of nursing, such as consulting, or to become a nurse practitioner, there is much more studying required.

  2. I can tell you first hand that travel nursing is not for everyone. If you don’t have any home ties and love to travel, it can be great. Before anyone commits to it, get some experience, especially at least a year of acute care, ER stints, etc. Those that have the most experience and positive feedback from their previous assignments, will get a better choice on future assignments. Work hard and don’t get involved in hospital politics!!
